When Should a Tooth Be Removed?

Common reasons why a tooth would need to be extracted include:

Removing a Tooth

When you come to our office, your oral surgeon will discuss your concerns, review any X-rays, perform a complete oral examination, and create a treatment plan to best suit your needs. Your surgeon will review your treatment plan with you in detail and answer any questions you may have. Some tooth extractions may happen on the same day as the consultation.

Many tooth extractions require only local anesthesia, but if a tooth needs to be surgically removed (such as wisdom teeth extraction) or is more complex it may require IV sedation. Your surgeon will review your options for anesthesia with you during your consultation. We will make every effort to ensure your comfort throughout your procedure.

Your surgical procedure will start with the administration of anesthesia. If the tooth is above the gums, your surgeon will remove the tooth using forceps. If the tooth is partially or completely impacted, they will make an incision into the gums and remove the tooth.

Tooth Replacement Options After Extraction

Removable Dentures or Dental Bridges

Traditional dentures or bridges may be used to replace one or more missing teeth. They are are removable, unlike dental implants. A dental bridge can be fixed or removable. These types of tooth restoration do not prevent against bone loss in the jaw and must be replaced over time due to wear and tear. Our office performs pre-prosthetic surgery for those desiring a secure and comfortable fit from their dentures.

Socket Preservation (Bone Grafting)

Bone grafting material may be placed into an empty tooth socket immediately after extraction. This helps to prepare the mouth for a dental implant in the future. Many patients who desire a dental implant but need a tooth extracted choose socket preservation. Our office can also place immediate dental implants on the same day as a tooth extraction.
