Wisdom Teeth Removal in Louisville, KY

Third Molar Extraction

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last teeth to come in, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. Many patients have four wisdom teeth, although some have fewer, some have more, and some have none at all. However, most people do not have enough room for these large molars, so complications are common when wisdom teeth do try to squeeze in. Most dental experts recommend wisdom teeth removal during the early to mid-teen years, before complications have a chance to occur.

Dr. Livesay, Dr. Carey, and Dr. Naselsker are board-certified oral surgeons at Innovative Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Studio. With two state-of-the-art practices in Louisville and one in Bardstown, we are proud to serve the greater Louisville community. If you or your child need wisdom teeth removal, contact our practice today to schedule a consultation.

Why Should Wisdom Teeth Be Removed?

Wisdom teeth are notorious for causing oral health issues, such as pain, infection, impaction, dental shifting, dental crowding, damage to nearby teeth, tooth decay, cysts and tumors, and more. Since wisdom teeth are not essential to proper bite alignment, and because of the high incidence of complications, removal as a preventive measure is often recommended by dental professionals. However, not all wisdom teeth need to be removed, and your dentist or oral surgeon will discuss your options with you.

Signs and Symptoms of Wisdom Teeth

Your family dentist will monitor the growth and development of your child’s wisdom teeth and will refer you to an oral surgeon when it’s time for removal. Signs and symptoms of wisdom teeth include:

  • Red or swollen gums
  • Pain in the jaw
  • Sore or bleeding gums
  • Bad breath
  • Bad taste in the mouth

Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Your first visit to our office will be your consultation. At this appointment, you’ll meet with your oral surgeon, who will perform a comprehensive oral evaluation, review or take any imaging, and create a treatment plan with your specific needs in mind. Your options for anesthesia will also be discussed. Your oral surgeon will explain your treatment and answer any questions you have to ensure you feel comfortable and informed.

Your surgical procedure will begin with the administration of anesthesia. If the wisdom teeth have already erupted, they can be extracted like a general tooth extraction. If they are impacted, or have not yet erupted, your surgeon will make an incision in the gum tissue, expose the tooth, and remove it. The surgical site will be sutured closed, and you will rest comfortably until the effects of the anesthesia have worn off.

Types of Anesthesia

Our practice offers several forms of anesthesia.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does wisdom teeth removal surgery last?

Most wisdom tooth extractions take between 30 to 60 minutes. However, every patient is different. Your surgeon can provide a more accurate estimation based on your specific treatment during your consultation.

When should I get my wisdom teeth removed?

For most people, the ideal time to get their wisdom teeth removed is during their early to mid-teen years. During this time, the wisdom teeth are undeveloped and therefore easier to remove. Removing wisdom teeth at this time also prevents complications from occurring. However, wisdom teeth can be removed at almost any age.

How much does it cost to have wisdom teeth removed?

The cost of wisdom teeth removal surgery depends on several factors, like the type of insurance, how many wisdom teeth need to be removed, the type of anesthesia used, and more. We can provide you with a more accurate estimate after your consultation.

What is recovery after wisdom tooth removal like?

We want every patient to have an optimal outcome. We will provide you with detailed instructions to follow after your surgery to ensure you have a smooth recovery. If you have any questions about your recovery or the instructions given to you, please call our office.
